Nature Photography Meetup

Saturday 06 July
Shepherdsville - 10am - 2 Hours
Maree Grosser
Join this session for tips on how to use your camera settings to creatively capture nature in a visually interesting way. We will be looking at composition, focus, and colour.

Many professional offices and places of business have large prints gracing their wall space of things such as fields of flowers, a butterfly perched on a leaf, and a single dew drop on a rose petal. These beautiful images are all around us in nature. It just takes that special "eye" to not only see it but to capture it in a way that will turn that simple little piece of nature into a beautiful piece of art. We will learn how to use different angles, light and shadows, and settings to make subjects pop.

While photographing peach blossoms on our property, this Red Admiral butterfly stopped by for a visit. Needless to say, I was surprised to see a butterfly so early in the year. I do hope this is a sign that the butterfly numbers will be up this year. March 16, 2024Fuji X-T3, XF 18-135 zoom lens.

The picture was taken around 8am, the morning Golden hour is my favorite time by far, especially when there's a little fog or in this case a morning dew. With dew drops clinging to the leaves the bokeh takes on an interesting look of small glowing orbs in the fore and back ground. My camera is a Canon EOS RP, the lens was a 50 mm, shutter speed 125, aperture 1.8, and ISO was 100.

I captured this at Hovey Lake looking for interesting wildlife. I love the contrast between the dead winter growth and the blue sky reflecting into the stream of water flowing through it. Taken on February 25, 2024 Nikon D750 200mm (200-500mm) f5/6 1/1250 sec f/5.6 ISO 250. Edited in Lightroom

This photo was taken with a Nikon D750 using an AF Micro Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 D set to f/32 at a 30 second shutter speed second ISO 400 on a tripod. It was a cold & windy night, so I used a 30 second shutter speed to smooth out the water. I stopped all the way down to f/32 to get the star effect on the lights then adjusted the ISO to balance out the exposure. In post I shifted the tint slightly to blue and dehazed the photo and increased the vibrance.

For 2 weeks every winter Sydney is lit up with amazing colours and beams of light over the Harbour Bridge, Opera House, and various buildings throughout the city. I captured this photo of the Opera House from across the water at the Overseas Passenger Terminal. I used a slow shutter speed (of 1 sec) to capture light trails from the passing water craft, and I held my iPhone up against my lens to create an artificial reflection on the water.Canon R6ii, RF 70-200mm f2.8 (@ 70mm), 1s, iso 200.
